Project Overview

Client: Whatcom Transportation Authority

I designed graphics to represent three fun facts about Whatcom Transportation Authority. To challenge myself and align with the client’s preferences, I chose an illustrative style that was new to me. The posters would inform riders about WTA’s impact and importance to enhance public perception.

Project Timeline: 2 Weeks (35 hrs.)

Deliverables:

  • Three 30 by 80-inch posters for WTA Bus’s

Front view of a bus with a digital sign that reads "YOUTH RIDE FREE" parked at a transit station.

Fun Fact Prompts

3.7 Million Rides Per Year (on all modes of transportation)

WTA Paratransit: 70,000 trips to medical appointments per year, for our neighbors with Disablities

People with disabilities travel 1 million miles per year on WTA Paratransit, that’s 42 times around the globe!

1. Visual Style

Visual direction incorporates an illustrative style with flat vibrant colors, simple shapes, blocky bold type, and simplistic and clean messaging. The posters need to use only the main and tertiary Whatcom brand colors.

An infographic about public transportation benefits, illustrating various modes of transit such as buses and trains, with statistics on trips provided, economic impact, and environmental benefits.

2. Digital Iterations

Round 1

For the first round, I was tasked with creating two different layouts for each fun fact for a total of 6 designs. For the top options I tried to create an abstract infographic, while the bottom versions are more straightforward.

Infographic showing 3.7 million rides per year with illustrations of a cyclist and a pedestrian and the WTA logo, promoting connecting people to opportunity.
Illustration of three different types of transportation vehicles: a white WTA bus, a blue train, and a white van, with the text '3.7 Million Rides Per Year!' and the WTA logo with the slogan 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
A graphic with text stating that neighbors with disabilities travel 70,000 trips per year to medical appointments on Paratransit, featuring city skyline, a house, a bus, and a hospital building, with the WTA logo and slogan 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
Illustration of a woman using a walker with a young person seated in a wheelchair, both being assisted by another woman. A large banner displays text about travel and medical appointments for neighbors with disabilities, featuring the WTA logo and the slogan 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
Graphic showing a bus with the WTA logo traveling through a cityscape with tall buildings, promoting travel for people with disabilities across 1 million miles per year with the slogan "Connecting People to Opportunity."
Infographic showing that people with disabilities travel 1,000,000 miles per year on WTA Paratransit, equivalent to driving from Bellingham to Seattle 22,236 times. The graphic features a city skyline, map pins on Bellingham and Seattle, and the WTA logo with the tagline Cutting People to Opportunity.

Round 2

In the second round, I had a coworker do an iteration for the 3.7 million layouts and the globe 1 million miles layout. I was also instructed to slightly push the 70,000 Trip doctor’s office layout while simplifying the illustration.

Graphic celebrating 3.7 million rides per year by WTA with silhouettes of people running and hiking against a forest backdrop and the text 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
A graphic celebrating 3.7 million rides per year for the WTA, featuring illustrations of a bus, a van, and a shuttle with passengers, and the WTA logo with the tagline 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
Illustration of a healthcare professional talking to a senior patient on a video call, with text overlay promoting Transit Authority trips to medical appointments, and the WTA logo.
Illustration showing a senior man and a doctor talking during a medical appointment, with text promoting 70,000 trips on transit for medical appointments for neighbors with disabilities, and the WTTA bus logo.
Illustration of people with disabilities traveling on a WTA Paratransit bus outside a large hospital building. The text reads 'People with Disabilities Travel 1 Million Miles/Yr on WTA Paratransit' with the WTA logo and the slogan 'Connecting People to Opportunity'.
Infographic showing that people with disabilities travel over 1 million miles per year on paratransit, which is 42 times the distance around the globe. Includes a graphic of a bus, the WTA logo, and a globe with connecting lines.

Round 3

At this point, the 3.7 million miles layout was solidifying, with just small changes to the background, type weights, and logo size. For the 70,000 trips layout, we went back to a previous version and refined things. For the 1 million miles layout, I handed off the design to a coworker to create the white spiral around the earth.

Graphic illustrating that the WTA provides 3.7 million rides per year with images of a bus, a van, and a shuttle, and the text '3.7 Million Rides per Year' and WTA logo, with the slogan 'Connecting people to opportunity'.
Graphic showing transportation for medical appointments for neighbors with disabilities, including a bus labeled WTA, a house, and a hospital building, with two individuals, one in a wheelchair, near the hospital.
World map with a bus and the text '1 Million Miles on Paratransit in 2024. That's like circling the Earth 42 times!'.

Round 4

For the 3.7 million layouts, I filled in the car/bus windows of the two smaller buses, and used an alternate, more simplistic WTA logo. For the 70,000 Trips, I replaced the solid windows of the bus with riders per the client’s request and removed the people outside the hospital to simplify the overall design. I also adjusted the type on the swoosh in the 1 million miles layout, to make it seem like it follows the curve more.

Graphic with the text '3.7 Million RIDES per YEAR' and illustrations of a white van, a double-decker bus, and a shuttle bus with people inside, featuring the WTA logo.

4. Posters

Additionally, I created some ad posters to be displayed at a few of the WTA bus stops and stations.

Three posters showing statistics and facts about the WTA transportation service, including number of rides, trips for medical appointments, and miles traveled on paratransit in 2024, with illustrations of buses and a globe.
